R&D Québec’s Advantages

Constant Growth in R&D Expenditures In 2006, research and development expenditures represented more than 2.7% of Québec's GDP, which is higher than the averages for the OECD, G7 and EU countries. More than 1,1 million people (or 1,100,000) in Québec are employed in science and technology occupations.

In 2007, Québec received almost 25.6% of university research funding awarded in Canada.

  • Dozens of public and private establishments in Québec are engaged in science and technology research.
  • On the public side, organizations like Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence provide impetus for research and promote partnerships.
  • Montréal is the university research capital of Canada.  Greater Montréal ranks first in terms of funds dedicated to university research and the number of university researchers. It also has the largest number of research centres (210). (Montréal International 2008)
  • Réseau Trans-tech is a network of 35 college technology-transfer centres conducting work in applied research, technical assistance, technology watch and information distribution and delivering services in R&D, technical support and training adapted to companies' needs.

Close links exist among universities and colleges, R&D centres and the business community in Québec.

In the private sector: Québec companies spent more than CDN$4.5 billion on R&D in 2007, or 30% of the Canadian total.1 Québec firms have a strong presence on international markets, displaying innovation and distinguishing themselves through original products recognized throughout the world.
