About BiopolisQuébec

BiopolisQuébec is the alliance of leading life sciences regions in the province of Québec (Montréal, Québec and Sherbrooke) dedicated to promote the expertise of this major sector internationally.

In Québec, Life Sciences and Health Technologies provide employment to nearly 43 000 people in 620 organizations, including 150 research centers and 80 subsidiaries of foreign companies. Québec companies’ investments in Life Sciences R&D represents about 30% of all Canadian R&D expenditures in the sector. The significant presence of multinationals subsidiaries reflects a very favourable business climate in Québec for R&D investments as well as for market access.   

Québec is one of the few regions of the world where a company can undertake all development stages of a life science product, from basic research to the final product, including preclinical, clinical, manufacturing and marketing stages.

Featured technologies developed in Québec include:

  • Merck Frosst: Singulair® (asthma), Arcoxia® (pain) and 222® (pain),  
  • Shire BioChem: 3TC® (HIV/AIDS)
  • GlaxoSmithKline Biologics (GSK Biologics):   Fluvarix® (flu vaccine),
  • Wyeth:  Premarin® (menopause), 
  • EndoRecherche:
    • Medical castration of men with LHRH agonists, commercialized by Astra Zeneca and Abbott; a treatment which replaced surgical castration and high doses of estrogens for prostate cancer patients. It has been used for more than 20 years as the standard treatment around the world.
    • Combined therapy with an antiandrogen and castration (LHREH agonist or surgery); the first treatment shown to prolong life in prostate cancer. Commercialized by Schering-Plough, Roussel and Astra Zeneca.
  • EndoCeutics:  Vaginorm® (vaginal atrophy and sexual dysfunction at post menopause). To be commercialized by Bayer.
  • BD GeneOhm diagnostics tests:  MRSA®, StaphSR®, StrepB®, VanR® and C-Diff®.
  • Diagnocure molecular diagnostic tests:  PCA3® (Prostate) and Previstage® (Colorectal).
  • Otto Bock HealthCare / Victhom Human Bionics devices:  Neurostep and Power Knee for gait disorders.
  • Theratechnologies product:  EGRIFTAmc Theratechnologies
  • Resonant Medical product:  Clarity Breast System by (medical imaging)
  • Gamma Medica / Advanced Molecular Imaging:  a new unsurpassed generation of PET scan, dedicated to leading small animal medical imaging into a new digital era with its unique sensor readout systems
